Years 3 to 6. The foundation of everything
These four years decide more about your child’s future than any other stage of their education.It is the most important foundation stage in your child’s entire education. Not Year 10. Not Year 12. Year 3 to Year 6.Every skill your child builds here, every gap they leave unfilled, every concept they truly understand or quietly misunderstand, determines what happens next. In Year 7. In Year 9. In their GCSEs. In their A-Levels. In their university essays. In their career.There are two levels of support we offer at Making Learning Happen, and both begin here, in KS2.Tier 1: Strong foundations in Maths and English for every child. Every child deserves this. It is the baseline for everything that follows.Tier 2: 11+ preparation for families targeting Reading Boys or Kendrick. But Tier 2 is only possible if Tier 1 is solid. The 11+ builds on foundations. It cannot replace them.If your child’s foundations are strong, the door to grammar school is open. If they are not, the door to everything becomes harder to push.
WHY IT MATTERS NOW
In primary school: SPaG determines how well a child scores on SATs. The Year 6 SATs include a dedicated grammar, punctuation and spelling paper. Every mark counts.In secondary school: Every single subject requires written answers. Science, History, Geography, Religious Studies, English Literature all marked on the quality of written communication as well as knowledge.At GCSE: Written expression is assessed formally across almost every subject. A child with weak SPaG loses marks in every paper they ever sit.At A-Level: Essays become the primary method of assessment. A student who cannot write clearly, structure an argument, and use language precisely is at a severe disadvantage regardless of how well they understand the subject.At university: Every degree involves essays. Law, Medicine, Engineering, Business, Sciences all require written assignments. A first-year student who was never properly taught grammar in primary school will struggle with academic writing for years. In the workplace: Emails,reports, proposals, presentations. Professional communication is written communication. An adult who writes unclearly is perceived as less competent. This follows a child from Year 3 all the way to their career.
THE RISK
A SPaG gap in Year 3 is still there in Year 9 if no one addresses it.These gaps rarely fix themselves. They compound.Most parents only become aware of a SPaG gap when it shows up in a school report or a disappointing SATs result. By then, years have passed.The earlier we address it, the easier it is to fix.
